Kratom Information

What is Kratom?

Kratom, also known by its scientific name, Mitragyna speciosa, is a tropical evergreen tree native to Southeast Asia, primarily found in countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea. Belonging to the coffee family, it has been traditionally used for centuries by indigenous communities in these regions for its medicinal and stimulant properties.

The active compounds in kratom are alkaloids, most notably mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, which interact with opioid receptors in the brain to produce various effects. Depending on the dosage, kratom can act as a stimulant, providing increased energy, focus, and sociability, or as a sedative, promoting relaxation and pain relief.

In its traditional use, kratom leaves were chewed fresh, brewed into a tea, or dried and ground into a powder for consumption. These practices were often utilized by manual laborers to combat fatigue and enhance productivity. It also has a history of use in folk medicine to treat ailments like diarrhea, coughs, fever, and pain.

In modern contexts, kratom has gained popularity worldwide as a natural remedy for managing chronic pain, reducing symptoms of opioid withdrawal, and alleviating anxiety or depression. It is commonly sold in powder, capsule, or extract form and is marketed as a dietary supplement in many countries.

American Kratom Association

The American Kratom Association (AKA) is dedicated to protecting the rights of all Americans to legally consume safe kratom to better manage their overall health and well-being. The American Kratom Association has 5 main goals:

  • The FDA does everything it can do to interfere with the right of consumers to make informed choices about products they use for their health and well being, and their war on kratom includes distributing disinformation on kratom that materially misleads consumers and policy makers. Our goal is to change that.

  • Kratom is a natural plant that helps consumers improve their health and well being for centuries. Our goal is to educate all Americans with the truth about kratom — from potential consumers to regulators and everyone in between.

  • We represent millions of Americans that each have a story to tell. The FDA wants to drown out the individual voices, but we will raise those voices and together we will be heard across America.

  • Anti-kratom detractors are trying to expand kratom bans across the world. We hope to demonstrate responsible use and the health benefits of kratom will convince other countries to responsibly regulate kratom, not ban it.

  • Kratom is a precious natural resource that is an important part of our global ecosystem. We support and advocate for sustainable harvesting techniques and reforestation protecting existing kratom forests to protect the climate and the invaluable carbon exchange kratom trees contribute to the environment.

Federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act

This bill requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to hold a hearing and establish a task force on the health and safety of products with kratom. It also prohibits the FDA from regulating kratom products in a manner that is more restrictive as compared to regulations for food, dietary supplements, or dietary ingredients.

Success Stories

  • “Kratom has helped me get clean and stay clean from a decade long heroin habit that I had come to believe would be the death of me. Not only does it just about eliminate the symptoms of withdrawal, its continued use after withdrawal (at a much lower dose than while detoxing) can help with issues that lead you to opiates in the first place, such as severe anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia. Before I started Kratom I had tried methadone, subutex, suboxone, the withdrawal protocols at detox centers (benzos, tramadol, trazodone and a few others) and nothing worked. I was almost resigned to giving up when one day, scrolling through the internet, I encountered my first article related to kratom. As I read through it I was very skeptical, but decided I had nothing to lose. I did as much research as I could, found a local seller (after the first few ounces I found a reputable online seller of organic kratom), booked a room for a week at the hot springs near where I live and prepared myself for the hell of withdrawal. Puking, chills, sweats, twitchy muscles, insomnia, all that fun stuff. On a recommendation I read online, I had started to take the kratom a week before attempting to withdraw, small doses til I figured out how much I needed. There was no high, though it did enhance the effects of the dope, and I wasnt giving it any hope yet. After all, I had tried to get clean over a dozen times, both on my own and with professional help. When I got to the hot springs I did my last dose of heroin, threw away all the paraphernalia, curled up in bed and resigned myself to waking up in hell. To my great surprise, I woke up feeling almost normal. I thought to myself, “I cant have been asleep that long. Anything over 8 hours and I'd be dying. I looked at the clock. 14 hours. I carefully eased out of bed, expecting the sick to hit me any second. Instead my stomach growled. Anyone here who has been through it knows that when you're detoxing, the LAST thing you want within 10 feet of you is food. Yet here I was, hungry. It took me a minute to process this and accept that I didnt feel sick at all. A little tired, a little off kilter, but sick ? Not a bit. Those next few days were the longest I had been clean in over 10 years. The best part was, I didnt even miss the dope. Previously, whenever I went to rehab, I had spent every moment thinking about dope. And now, I couldnt care less. I allowed myself a tiny bit of hope. As the few days passed and I found myself eating, social and yet clean. It almost made me want to believe in a God, just so I could have someone to thank.”

  • “After being on mass amounts of opiates for 9 years and then 24 mg of suboxen for 2.5 years I was introduced to kratom. Flippin miracle tree! I stopped suboxen cold turkey with kratom and not 1 withdraw symptoms and now I use kratom on an as needed basis ! That's why big pharma wants it illigal it is way better than anything they have to offer.”

    -Steve Brockman

  • "I took over 800 pills/ month (hydrocodone, oxycodone, Tramadol and hydromorphone) for over 5 years and when I was cut off I was told clonazepam was now my life. So many times I looked for an escape from Life over all of this chronic pain. Kratom was the miracle that gave me back quality of life without pain, depression, loss of sleep etc and I have taken myself off of it three times since 2014 just to see if I could and what the kratom withdrawals would be like. Similar to caffeine withdrawals... A little bit of restless leg syndrome, irritability and a few headaches, and of course the back and neck pains returned that I was initially alleviating with kratom. This is a small price to pay to avoid being a junkie to narcotics that were and probably will again be the controlling factor in my life if Kratom is made illegal. All because big pharma will lose profits from sales declines. And furthermore, less than a hundred kratom deaths reported over two years even though only nine are legit? Compared to what? How many deaths from cigarettes? Alcohol overdose? How many alcoholics have drank themselves to death trying to self-medicate psychological pain over the same two years? Thousands? Tens of thousands? This seems like a very small percentage which would prove the point is statistically safe even if all 90 deaths were a valid statistic. I am disgusted by our government putting money ahead of people's lives and quality of life."

  • "I was on opiate pain pills for over 15 years. I finally got so disgusted with the hassle and paranoia of my doctor I took myself off of them with the help of kratom. In a week I was having no cravings or thoughts to use percocet. It still left me with the dilemma of how to handle my chronic pain. Ibuprofen works fairly well, but my stomach will not allow me more than 1-600mg pill a day. So I researched natural methods and found Kratom. I also use a company that guarantees rigid QA testing of every kratom batch. I can go from bedridden to being able to move about with one dose of Kratom, which normally lasts about 6 hours. Yes, it is mildly addictive, but Nothing like opiates! If the powers that be choose to take this alternative from the millions of us who need a daily medication for pain, I simply will lose all faith in our Health Industry.”
