My World Tour of Self Discovery and Solo Travel: 17 Countries in 2024
As the sun rose on January 8th, 2024, I stood at the beginning of a journey that would take me through 17 countries in just one year. It was a dream I had nurtured for years, a desire to explore the world, immerse myself in diverse cultures, and create memories that would last a lifetime. Each destination promised new adventures, culinary delights, and unforgettable encounters. I had no idea I would be going to so many places in such a short amount of time, consecutively, and ALONE. I bought one-way tickets to each of these countries, living my life one week at a time. I’ll be sharing more in-depth details about each of these places. For now, here’s a glimpse into my whirlwind tour of the world, starting from Turkey and ending in the United States.
Turkey: Where East Meets West
My journey began in Turkey, a country that beautifully straddles two continents. I explored the bustling streets of Istanbul, where the aroma of spices wafted through the Grand Bazaar, and marveled at the stunning Hagia Sophia. I came here for the purpose of a surgery, and it ended up being a huge awakening for me. I didn’t want to go back to the U.S, because of some personal reasons, so I thought I’d just try a neighboring country.
Greece: Gods and Mythology
Next up was Greece, where I indulged in the history of Athens. The ancient ruins of the Acropolis resonated with stories of gods and heroes, while the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea called me to relax and revel in the beauty of island life. I needed some time to heal from my surgery, so I got a little apartment in the Plaka area, just minutes from the Acropolis. After Athens, I got on a tiny plane and traveled to Mykonos, where I was literally the only tourist because it was winter. At this point, I didn’t want to go back to the U.S., and I was hoping for some warmer weather. I had always wanted to try Southeast Asia, as I love the Asian culture. My surgery made it hard to sit on a plane for too long, so I thought I’d take a few days in Dubai before I headed to Thailand.
United Arab Emirates: A Modern Oasis
The United Arab Emirates was a striking contrast to my previous stops. In Dubai, I marveled at the architectural wonders like the Burj Khalifa and the opulence of the malls. It did remind me of Las Vegas, which I used to frequent when I lived in Salt Lake City. A hot, dry desert where someone decided to put an adult Disney Land.
Thailand: A Tropical Paradise
From the urban jungle of Dubai to the tropical paradise of Thailand, the change was exhilarating. Humidity and heat slapped me in the face as soon as I landed. The vibrant streets of Bangkok were alive with energy, and I savored the street food, from spicy pad thai to mouth-watering mango sticky rice. At this point, I was still having an aversion to the U.S., so I figured, “hey I’m really close to Bali. I’ve always wanted to go there.” So, I did!
Indonesia: The Island of Gods
Indonesia was next on my itinerary. I was captivated by Bali's stunning landscapes, from terraced rice fields to pristine beaches. I immersed myself in the local culture, visiting ancient temples and participating in traditional ceremonies. The warmth of the Balinese people left a lasting impression on my heart. This is a place that I would absolutely go back to.
Australia: Land Down Under
From Bali, I realized I was awfully close to Austrailia. I have a dear friend who lives in Sydney that I hadn’t seen in ages, so I decided to visit her. I felt completely welcomed by the people of Sydney. I think they are the friendliest people I have ever met. The architecture of the Opera House was breathtakingly brilliant and The Tour of The Rocks and the history of how Australia came to be was truly captivating. When I was in Bali, I had a very specific and special dream. This dream let me to go back to Indonesia, but this time to Borneo.
Borneo: Nature’s Wonderland
The island of Borneo is made of 3 different countries. For the sake of this list, I count it as its own country that I visited as it was so different form Bali. Here I hired a guide who was raised in the jungle. He took me through the jungle to help me follow my dream. Literally! More on that to come. From Borneo, I knew I needed to go back to Thailand after I had this very vivid and direction driven dream. More on that to come. I’ll include that on my blog about Thailand. After Thailand, I decided to go to India. At this point, I realized that I am not a fan of long fights, and I decided that I would just country hop my way back to the U.S.
India: A Cultural Tapestry
Arriving in India was like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and flavors. I had first flown into Goa where I quickly realized wasn’t my vibe. That’s when I went to Kerala after a few days. I went to an Ayurvedic retreat center for a week and then I went to an ashram for a few weeks. In total, I was in India for a month. Towards the end, my heart got broken so I decided to go drown my sorrows in pasta as I headed back to the U.S.
Italy: A Feast for the Senses
Rome, A timeless city where ancient history, stunning architecture and vibrant culture create a captivating experience for all who enter. And the food. I mean, that’s number one. I was only here for a week before I decided that I’d like to get a feel for German culture.
Germany: A Blend of History and Modernity
Germany offered a fascinating blend of history and contemporary culture. In Berlin, I explored the remnants of the Berlin Wall and experienced the vibrant art scene. I also went to the famous Kit Kat Club, which would be a more adult themed blog, so brace yourself for that!
Denmark: Hygge and History
Denmark was a delightful blend of modern design and historical charm. In Copenhagen, I marveled at the colorful Nyhavn harbor, strolled through the Tivoli Gardens, and visited the Christiania. I embraced the concept of ‘hygge, ’indulging in cozy cafés and warm pastries. Here I visited two friends I had met in India.
Netherlands: Canals and Tulips
The Netherlands was next, where I found myself enchanted by the picturesque canals of Amsterdam. I went to to a few museums, saw Van Gogh and went on an Anne Frank tour. The charming streets and friendly locals made me feel at home as I enjoyed stroopwafels and explored the vibrant nightlife.
Scotland: The Land of Legends
Scotland, known for its rugged landscapes, hroyal Mile where Edinburgh Castle and the palace of historic castles and rich cultural heritage. I listened to the bagpipes on the street as I walked
From Edinburgh Castle to Holyroodhouse. I also took a tour of Mary King’s Close and the Johnny Walker’s whisky experience.
England: A Journey Through Time
In England, I delved into the rich history and culture of London, visiting iconic landmarks like the Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. I explored the charming countryside of the Cotswolds, where quaint villages and rolling hills created a picturesque landscape. I went to Bath and experienced Jane Austin’s life. I also did a more local tour of northern England after my time in Scotland, crossing the boarder.
Wales: Unique language and Stunning Landscapes
Here I only went to Cardiff to visit a friend. We went to Ogmore by Sea Beach, Saint Fagan’s National Museum of History, and walked through the Welch countryside. I unfortunately only spent a few days here to see my friend. I will have to come back to explore more!
Ireland: Lush and Vibrant
I started in Dublin and explored the streets on Halloween night and discovered a vibrant night life. I ventured up to Northern Ireland and visited to the Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Reed bridge. I went to Kilkenny and discovered Kilkenny Castle, staying at a lovely bed and breakfast nearby.
Stay tuned for the first installment of Self Discovery/Solo Travel journey where I break down my whole experience in Istanbul, which I traveled to twice last year!
